Imphal, November 09 2022:
Transport Minister Khashim Vashum has raised concern 'over the younger generations of Manipur losing interest in the handloom and handicrafts items of the State' .
Addressing the 5th day of Manipur International Textile Expo (MANITEX), 2022 observed as Ukhrul and Kamjong Day at Urban Haat Nilakuthi today as the chief guest today, the Minister continued that all the indigenous people of Manipur-the Meeteis and tribals have close connections with their handloom and handicraft items.
The Tangkhul populace has unique handloom and handicraft items of their own, he said and added these items are used during the important occasions of Tangkhuls.
Saying that Chief Minister N Biren has started to use 'our own handloom and handicraft items' at his office to promote them, Khashim Vashum maintained that 'it, however, is unfortunate that these items of ours are not popular among the majority of the younger generations' .
He expressed desire for the younger generation to take part in preserving the culture and identity of Manipur.
The Minister further stated that there must be Government schemes regarding promotion of handloom and handicraft items of hill districts.
There, however, is lack of awareness among the people regarding the Government schemes and so they don't get any benefits, he added.
