Vehicle knocks dead pedestrian trio, driver arrested

Imphal, November 09 2022:
Three pedestrians were killed on the spot after a speeding vehicle knocked them down at Khurai Chaithabi crossing along Imphal-Ukhrul road under Porompat police station at about 10.30pm on Tuesday.
The deceased pedestrians have been identified as Konsam Ingocha (45) son of late Ibotombi, Kharibam Naoba Meetei (32) son of late Lemba and Kshetrimayum Suraj (26) son of late Soma Singh, all from Khurai Nandeibam Leikai, Imphal East district.
According to a police source, a Tata Telcoline vehicle (UP 32 DN 2031) coming from Sajiwa side along the Imphal-Ukhrul road knocked down the trio in front of Shaibo hospital, killing the pedestrians instantly while the vehicle escaped from the spot.
In connection with the incident, Porompat police registered a suo moto case under IPC 304-A279 .
After checking CCTV video footages of Khurai area, Khuman Lampak and some areas of Imphal West district to trace the involved vehicle, police came to know that the escaped vehicle was a Tata Telcoline.
The same vehicle was later impounded from a motor workshop at Ayangpali by a team of Porompat PS led by ASI Akhtar Hussain.
The vehicle was found repaired to wipe off evidences of the accident.
Later, driver of the vehicle identified as S Sopei (37) son of WS Ningwon of Tuinem (Teinem) village, Ukhrul was arrested from New Checkon area by the same police team.
