Imphal, November 09 2022:
A large number of street vendors on Tuesday attempted to storm the office of Imphal Municipal Corporation (IMC) but were intercepted by police, resulting in a stand-off.
Speaking to newspersons in this regard, Khwairamband Keithel Street Vendors' Welfare Union president L Beda Devi recounted that IMC administrator M Joy Singh issued an order on October 16 notifying that street vendors would be allowed to sit at the Temporary Market in two separate shifts.
The vendors had previously appealed to the IMC officials to adhere to the order, but no action has been taken up till date, while those with connections are allowed to sit at the Market.
Urging the authority concerned to see how some people are sitting at the market, Beda said that those who do not have any papers specifying their status as street vendors and could serve as vote bank for Ksh Tama, have forcefully occupied the market as if it is their own private property.
