Man convicted in drug case arrested after 20 yrs

A team of Irilbung po lice station has finally arrested a man, who was convicted by the Special Court ND&PS in a drug case on January 30, 2002, after 20 years.
An arrest warrant was issued against the convict after the sentence was announced but the convict remained absconding for two decades.
On Wednesday, Md Amjad Ali s/o Md Yusuf Ali of Keirao Awang Leikai, who was convicted under the ND&PS Act in 2002, was produced before the court of Special Judge ND&PS Manipur by a team of Irilbung PS.
According to the report submitted by the OC, Md Amjad was arrested on November 8 from a paddy field in Menjor Ingkhol.
Md Amjad was arrested on January 16, 2000 with 165gm of cannabis and pronounced guilty by the Special Court ND&PS on January 30 of the same year.
The Special Court sentenced him to 3 years in rigorous imprisonment and ordered him to pay a fine of Rs 2000, failing which he must serve another 2 months in jail.
After the sentencing, Amjad remained absconding for two decades.
After his arrest, the convict paid the fine on November 9 this year.
The OC further informed the Court that after a warrant of arrest was issued against Md Amjad, he went into hiding at his residence along with Keirao Ward No 1 member Md Razaouddin of Keirao Makting GP.
The ward member himself had submitted a written statement to the police, stating that Md Amjad had not returned home for around 8 years.
Thus, the OC appealed to the Court to take up appropriate legal proceeding against the Ward member for keeping under wrap whereabouts of the convict under Section 197 of IPC.
After listening to the report, the Court lauded the team led by the OC of Irilbung PS for arresting Md Amjad and directed the authority concerned to provide additional incentive/award to the team.
Regarding the involvement of the ward member, the Court directed the DGP and Imphal East police authorities to take action on the matter and further ordered SP Manipur Central Jail Sajiwa to ensure that Md Amjad serves his full sentence.
