Imphal, November 09 2022:
The Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of Lilong Haoreibi College, Thoubal district, with the support of National Commission for Women (NCW) New Delhi, will organise a national seminar on 'Role of Women in Sports' on November 12 at college's multipurpose hall.
In a release, College principal Dr Raheijuddin Sheikh said that Manipur is considered as the 'Power House' of sports yet the participation of Muslims, more particularly women is very few.
The Manipuri Muslim women known as 'Meitei-Pangal Women' are also equally smart or even smarter than women of other communities in sports yet they cannot explore or expose their potential talents because of many factors.
However, during the last five years some girls of the community have come up in various fields of sports even in the martial arts.
As such, the upcoming seminar will focus on the reasons why negligible number of Muslim girls are taking to sports and suggest possible measures for uplift of women in sports before it is too late, the principal elaborated.
He also said that the Manipuri Muslim women have been actively participating in most of economic activities as their male counterparts, a unique culture which is not seen in the rest of the world where women are confined within the four walls under the purdah system.
The seminar is expected to throw light on this issue in particular and various other sub-themes in general within the broad theme "Role of Women in Sports" .
Manipur State Commission for Women chairperson Salam Ulka Devi and additional director of University & Higher Education P Shantikumar Singh will be participating as special guests of the inaugural sessions.
Director of University & Higher Education Dr Rangi-tabali Waikhom will present the keynote address of the seminar on the topic; 'Bleed with Pride' in the inaugural session.
Other topics of the technical sessions include 'Muslim Women in Sports; Past, Present & Future' by Dhanamanjuri University assistant professor Dr Syed Ahmed; 'Empowering Women Through Sports' by Lilong Haoreibi College assistant professor Dr Ashalata Maisnam; 'Sports in Manipuri Muslim Society' by eminent writer and researcher SM Sheikh; 'Educational Status of Manipuri Muslim Women and Participation in Sports ' by Modern College assistant professor Dr Feroja Syed; 'Manipuri Women in Sports; Challenges & Prospects' by Lilong Haoreibi College assistant professor N Bino Devi; 'From Pomelo to the Football; A Case Study' by Moreh College assistant professor Dr Kh Sapana and 'Scheduled Caste Women in Sports with special reference to Kakching District, Manipur' by Lilong Haoreibi College assistant professor Dr Ng Sapana Devi.
