Jiri responds positively to ST demand

Jiribam, November 09 2022:
Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee Manipur, Jiribam Branch held a sit-in protest in front of Irabot statue at Babupara today.
Womenfolk held placards and banners demanding Scheduled Tribe (ST) status for the indigenous Meetei/Meitei community.
They raised slogans demanding the State Government to send the required recommendation and data needed for inclusion of the Meetei/Meitei community in the ST list.
Inclusion of the community in the ST list is the only way to save the indigenous people and provide them with Constitutional safeguard, they said.
STDCM HQs, finance secretary Khagokpam Kunder and assistant organising secretary Khumukcham Ronex Khaba were also present at the sit-in protest.
Placards held at the protest read 'Save Yelhoumi, Save Manipur, Our Land is Our Identity, Respect Democratic Approach' .
At the protest, Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur, (DESAM) Jiribam District Committee president L Bilaksh Meitei said the student body supports STDCM's demand for ST status and it will cooperate in all future course of action.
"The State Government should send the recommendation sought by the Centre as soon as possible.
Demanding ST status is the legitimate right of the Meetei/Meitei community," he said.
STDCM, Jiribam Branch advisor Hamom Dhoni Meitei said the people of Jiribam support ST demand for the Meetei/Meitei community.
People of Jiribam will continue to support STDCM and demand ST status, he said appealing to the State Government to do the needful.
