Imphal, December 23, 2011:
In the aftermath of the formal inaugural of a tribal market complex at New Checkon in Imphal East district, a group of people staged a protest demonstration against the Government's plan to build another tribal market at Chingmeirong.
The protest demonstration staged at Chingmeirong Khongnang Karak was demanding construction of a market complex admissible to all communities, not exclusive to tribal people only.
The protesters put up placards which read as "No exclusive market complex should be constructed at Chingmeirong which is inhabited by different communities", "If a tribal exclusive market must be built, build it somewhere else not at Chingmeirong", "Drop the Government's plan" etc.
However at around 1.30 pm, a police team came there and drove away the women protesters after pulling down all the festoons and placards.
