Six arrested for mortgaging rented vehicles

Imphal, April 13 2023:
A team of Lamsang police station led by its OC H Sanjoy and SI S Surjakumar arrested six people from different locations in connection with a case of mortgaging two rented cars on Wednesday.
Police source said that on March 30, two individuals took on rent two vehicles - Baleno Metallic Silk (MN06LB 4768) and i20 white (MN01G 6803) from Angom Rental Service located at Langthabal Phuramakhong at the rate of Rs 3,000 per day per vehicle till April 4, on verbal contract.
However, the two individuals did not return the said vehicles even after lapse of the rental period nor came to pay additional rental fee.
The two kept on extending date for rental of vehicles when contacted by the agency.
Getting suspicious of their nature, the owner of the rental service traced the two cars and reported the same to Lamsang PS.
Lamsang police with the help of GPS location, tracked down the vehicles and found the i20 in Heibongpokpi area on April 11.The car was found in the possession of one Thangjam Samananda of Heibongpokpi Maning Leikai.
On questioning, it came to light that the vehicle was mortgaged to him for Rs 3.80 lakh on March 31 by four people, namely Maibam Deepu (24) son of M Ibomcha of Khurai Salanthong, Takhellambam Ajit (31) son of T Kumar of Lamdeng Khunou, Ingudam Robinnganba (28) son of I Robindro of Taothong Ayungba, and Lairenmayum Shantikumar (28) son of L Nena of Lambal Mayai Leikai.
It was later known that these two people produced fake Aadhaar Card and forged RC with the same particulars of the vehicle to mortgage the car to get quick money.
Further, the Baleno was recovered by Lamsang police from Lilong Arapati area from the possession of one Ojit of Lilong Arapti.
On questioning, it was revealed that the car was also mortgaged to him for Rs 4.2 lakh by Konsam Raju (28) son of K Saratkumar of Lilong Arapti and RK Dumba alias Dung (35) son of RK Sanajaoba of Singjamei Chirom Leikai.
They also used fake Aadhaar card and forged RC of the vehicle.
Consequently, police on Wednesday arrested the six people namely, Ajit, Robinnganba, Shantikumar and Raju along with two of their friends namely Ayekpam Gobind (34) of Sagolband Khamnam Leirak and Thiyam Robert (36) of Sangaiprou Mamang Leikai.
They were produced before the JMFC Imphal West-1 on Thursday and Gobind & Robert have been released on bail while the remaining four have been remanded in police custody for five days till April 17.RK Dumba was arrested on Thursday and will be produced before the court on Friday.
Meanwhile, Maibam Deepu of Khurai Salanthong is absconding, the source said.
Meanwhile, police advised the public against renting out vehicles to anyone without verifying their complete identity, or taking mortgage of vehicles without complete documents and verification of documents such as RC, Aadhaar Card.
