'Lease cars, mortgage them to pocket money' racket busted

A team of Lamsang Police arrested six persons yesterday from different locations for mortgaging two cars that had been acquired on lease from Angom Rental Service located at Langthabal Phuramakhong.
The six individuals have been identified as Maibam Deepu Meitei (24), Takhellambam Ajit Meitei (31), Ingudam Robinnganba Meitei (28), Lairenmayum Shantikumar Singh (28), Konsam Raju Singh (28)
and Rajkumar Dumba (35) .
The police team was led by H Sanjoy Meitei, OC, Lamsang PS and S Surjakumar, SI of Lamsang PS under the supervision of Rahul Gupta, IPS, SDPO Lamphel.
On March 30, two unnamed persons had rented two vehicles, namely, a metallic silk Baleno and a white i20 from Angom Rental Service at Rs 3,000 per day for each vehicle till April 4 on verbal contract.

However, the duo did not return the said vehicles even after the agreed period and did not pay the additional rent.
Instead, they reportedly kept on extending the rental period of the vehicles.
Based on growing suspicion of the owner of the rental service, these cars were tracked by Lamsang Police with the help of GPS.
On April 11, the i20 was tracked down to Heibongpokpi area and found in the possession of one Thangjam Samananda Singh of Heibongpokpi Maning Leikai.
On questioning, it was found out that the vehicle was provided to him under a mortgage of Rs 3,80,000 on March 31 by four persons, the aforementioned Deepu, Ajit, Robinnganba and Shantikumar.
It was found that the four produced fake Aadhar card and forged RC with the same particulars of the original owner of the vehicle to mortgage the car to get some quick money.
Further, the Baleno was tracked down to Lilong Arapati area and found in the possession of one Ojit Singh.
On questioning, it was revealed that the aforementioned Raju and Dumba had mortgaged the Baleno to him on payment of Rs 4,20,000.These two also produced fake Aadhar card and forged RC of the owner of the vehicle.
In this regard, police have issued an advisory to the public to refrain from renting out vehicles without verifying the identity of the persons and to not give out money for mortgaging vehicles without complete documents and verification of documents such as RC, Aadhar card.
