Jiribam, December 04 2021:
A two-day awareness programme on 'Indo-Myanmar Border Trade and Act East Policy (AEP) in ASEAN Countries' organised by Indo-Myanmar Border Traders' Union, Imphal, commenced from Saturday at Multi-utility complex hall here.
The opening session of the programme sponsored by the directorate of trade, commerce & industries was attended by retired associate professor Dr Th Manikumar of Nehru College, Cachar as chief guest and Union president Watham Nabachandra as president while SBI Jiribam branch manager Thangthianven; Manipur State Co-operative Bank, Jiribam branch manager Ayekpam Thoiba and Punjab National Bank, Jiribam branch senior manager MT Haokip were ptesent as guests of honour.
In his speech, Dr Manikumar said that there will be no development as long as people of the state consider government job as the only means for survival and continue to look for only the preferred profession.
The state would regress instead of going forward as long as this perception remains in the minds of people, he said, adding that the state now has nearly 10 lakh unemployed people out of around 30 lakh population and it would be difficult to ensure government jobs to all.
While appealing to people of Jiribam to understand the impact of train service in the state particularly in Jiribam in near future, Dr Manikumar said that time for infighting among indigenous people had already lapsed and indigenous people of the state must work collectively and be fully prepared to deal with the impact of train service.
People of Jiribam would be silent spectators when regular train service begins if unable to deal with the likely changes to be brought by train service, he cautioned.
