Imphal, December 04 2021:
Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has taken up a case in connection'with alleged arrest and torture of one Salam Ratan (46) of Iram Siphai by personnel of Wangoi PS on December 2 .
Speaking to newspersons at the Commission's office complex in Lamphelpat on Saturday, the victim Salam recounted that on December 2 around 11 pm, he along with a neighbour named John went to have paan at a shop in the locality.
After buying the paan, he was on his way home when a police vehicle came up to him and the personnel asked where his "friend'' had gone to.
He responded that they were out to buy paan.
The police personnel then ordered him to get into the vehicle and called John out of his home.
After boarding the vehicle, the personnel started questioning the whereabouts of a gun they had supposedly fired.
They then stopped the vehicle at some place and began beating up the two.
Both Ratan and John replied that they had heard some sound but did not know anything about the gun.
The personnel then took them to the police station and started kicking and beating them with sticks.
After making them stay in the lockup for the night, the police took their statements the next morning.
Both of them again iterated that they had gone out to buy paan.
During the time, they heard a sound similar to a firecracker but were unaware of anything else.
To this, the police accused them of lying and began to brutally beat them up.
He was later released on December 3 due to lack of evidence, Ratan recounted.
Ratan then said that he suffered severe contusion on his face and buttocks, for which he was hospitalised at RIMS.
In this regard, Ratan's wife Salam ongbi Sandhyarani filed a complaint to MHRC oft Saturday, based on which the Commission took up a case (case no.158 of 2021).Condemning the torture meted out to her husband by Wangoi PS personnel, Sandhyarani contended that her husband is innocent and appealed to the state government to initiate legal action against the police personnel involved.
