"Efforts on to make Loktak Day state function"

Mayang Imphal MLA Kongkham Robindro said that chief minister N Biren has already given nod to elevate Loktak Day, which is celebrated every year on the full moon day of Mera month, to a state function, and efforts are on to do the same from next year onwards.
The MLA was speaking at the 27th Loktak Day organised by Loktak Day Celebration Committee at Komlakhong Chingthi Ching under Mayang Imphal assembly constituency on Sunday.
Social welfare minister Heikham Dingo and K Robindro attended the event as chief guest and president respectively while Kumbi MLA Sanasam Premchandra, LDA chairman Moirangthem Asnikumar and committee president Asem Sarat were present as guests of honour.
In his address, MLA Robindro said that the festival is being celebrated with the objective to bring some positive changes in the ecosystem of Loktak Lake by creating awareness.
However, he feels sorry to see that nothing much could be done to protect the lake, he said, while calling for public participation.
Informing about the proposal to make Loktak Day a state level function, he said that the CM had already ap proved the proposal but further discussion was delayed due toCovid-19 pandemic.
He called upon all concerned to put their best efforts in making it a state festival from next year onwards and extend the festival period from one day to five days.
He urged the public not to worry after seeing the boundary map of Loktak Lake and said that the government will never work against the public.
He also drew attention of the government for changing the mindset of seeing Moirang only when it comes to Loktak Lake.
He then expressed appreciation to the Loktak Day Celebration Committee for its efforts, which resulted in attracting more and more tourists to Loktak Lake in Komlakhong area.
Meanwhile, minister Heikham Dingo assured of extending all possible help from his side to the people of Komlakhong and surrounding areas in developing Loktak Lake ecosystem in the area.
He also said that discussion would be held with senior leaders of the state government about possible ways to resolve the issues created by Loktak Hydro Power Project.
Comparing Loktak Lake with the Goose that laid golden eggs, he said that greedy nature of human being could damage the ecosystem of the lake just like the greedy owner did to the goose.
He also told the gathering that the government is taking up initiatives to invite scientists from abroad to explore ways to boost fish production in the lake.
Earlier, fingerlings were released into the lake as part of the celebration.
Cultural dances and other programmes were the main highlights in the evening.
