Imphal, January 08 2023:
Friends Union Club (FUC), Khongnang Pheidekpi and KWAMS Singjamei jointly organised one-day awareness on solid waste management under the theme 'Save Imphal River' at Seva Mandal Kangshang, Khongnang Pheidekpi on Sunday.
FUC president Thongam Ibomcha, Oinam Thingel GP pradhan Thongam Dara (Guneshwar), KWAMS proprietor Leishangthem Premjit and Khongnang Pheidekpi Makha Leikai Marup president Ningombam Mangi attended the programme as presidium members.
Speaking on the occasion, pradhan Thongam Dara explained that the awareness programme has been organised as a campaign to promote cleanliness and proper disposal of waste products, as well as to spread the message of keeping the Imphal River clean by avoiding disposal of waste into the river.
He also proposed the idea of ensuring every family to become subscriber of solid waste collection programme by making it mandatory for availing important documents.
Most of the families under the jurisdiction of FUC have become members of the programme, he said while urging the rest to join the initiative.
FUC treasurer Thongam Biswanath recalled the clean and safe condition of Imphal River some two to three decades back.
However, condition of the river has been deteriorating rapidly due to irresponsible and unregulated dumping of waste materials.
Keeping in view of the immediate necessity to save the river, which plays an important role in the state's eco-system, the club took the decision of organising the awareness programme to make the public understand the importance of rivers in a society and its natural ecosystem.
FUC Solid Waste Management Committee felicitated its subscribers, Yumnam Nongyai and Nongmaithem Tampha for endorsing the committee's endeavor despite their unstable financial condition.
Later, the meet resolved to impose fine against people found disposing waste materials into Imphal River or littering along its bank, handing over such people to police for taking up legal actions, and cash reward on submission of photos or videos of anybody dumping waste materials into the river or its banks.
FUC also appealed to all concerned to stop the practice of kitchen gardening on the banks of the river while adding that necessary steps would be taken up to make the river banks accessible for commuting.
