Imphal, January 08 2023:
While stating the merely putting City Police Station assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Salam Deepak under suspension is not enough; Social Youth Organisation (SOYO), Sanjenbam member Ngangom Ningthemjao has demanded that the ASI should be terminated from service and subjected to stringent punishment so as to restore the public's trust on police and prevent similar acts from happening in the future.
Addressing a press meet at Manipur Press Club, here, on Sunday, Ningthemjao recounted that on the night of January 5, ASI Deepak, in his full police uniform, entered the rented house of Thajamanbi, who was staying with her younger brother, at Tera Khuraijam Leirak and shot her with his service weapon.
Thajamanbi suffered serious bullet injuries and is currently undergoing treatment at Raj Medicity.
ASI Salam Deepak, who is from Iroisemba Mayai Leikai, is a married man with kids.
Such act by a police officer against a woman should not be taken lightly and is a huge embarrassment for the Manipur Police Department in front of the people, he said.
Questioning how the public-police relationship is suppose to improve if the police turn their guns on the people instead of protecting them; Ningthemjao demanded termination of ASI Deepak from service and awarding strict punishment so as restore the public's trust on police and deter any similar incidents in the future.
Mention may be made here that ASI Deepak was arrested by police on the day of the incident itself.
He was produced in the court of CJM, Imphal West on January 6 and remanded to police custody till January 10 for further investigation.
