Awareness program calls for end to dumping of garbage on Imphal River

An awareness program on 'Solid Waste Management' was jointly organised by Friends' Union Club (FUC) and Khaba Waste Management System (KWAMS) Singjamei at Seva Mandal Kangshang located at Kakwa Khongnangpheidekpi today.
Dignitaries present at the event include Thongam Ibomcha, president, FUC; Ningthoujam Mangi, president, Khongnangpheidekpi Makha Leikai Marup; Leishangthem Premjit, proprietor, KWAMS and Thongam Guneshwor (Dara), Pradhan, Oinam Thingel Gram Panchayat as the presidium members.
Delivering the keynote address, Thongam Bishwanath (Bullu), treasurer, FUC stated that the awareness program had been organised under the theme of "Save Imphal River" .
He stated that wastes from most households are dumped on the banks of Imphal River which has contaminated the water, made it dirty with the increased chances of potentially causing floods.
With the help of KWAMS, FUCs Solid Waste Management Committee has been constituted with the goal to stop the dumping of waste on the river bank, he stated.
Further he shared that around 160 households had registered in the Committee to help in bringing about a clean environment.
The Committee is preparing a similar campaign on a much larger scale, he added.
During the program, two individuals were honoured with awards for their contribution in the undertakings of FUC, Solid Waste Management Committee and several resolutions were taken.
Some of these resolutions include: to stop dumping of garbage in all areas of Khongnangpheidekpi especially on river banks; to levy fines on those found dumping garbage and subsequently hand them over to the police among others; to stop those who are maintaining kitchen gardens on the bank of Imphal River from doing so by February among others.
