Imphal, January 08 2023:
A leaders' meet of the unit level committee, youth and women wings of Thoubal Block Congress Committee was organised at Committee office at Thoubal town on Sunday with former chief minister O Ibobi as the chief guest.
Speaking at the meet, Ibobi, who is also the CLP leader, remarked that in democracy it would be wrong to assume that a party will always be in power.
One party comes to power and another party replacing the former party has been the norm in democracy.
As long as the people favour, a particular party will remain in power.
The Congress party understands this basic principle and it is also in the constitution of the party.
The CLP leader further said that a single party remaining in power for all the time happens in a dictatorship country only and not in a democratic set-up.
In a democratic country like India, the people's mandate is the final.
"The present BJP-led governments in the state and at the centre are in existence because the people favour the party for now and the people are testing the party.
But for how long people will trust the party and when BJP will fall, is a matter of time and Congress is keeping a close watch on the evolving development," he said.
While taking a dig at the BJP for the curtailing the freedom of speech and expression of the general population, O Ibobi stated that considering the state of affairs in Manipur, it is very hard to define the fate of democracy.
"When the government gags the people and prevent them from expressing their issues and problems through any platform, democracy will gradually cease to exist.
This is what is exactly happening in the state where the government rules by threatening and pressuring the people".
He also informed that the Congress party has started the "Bharat Jodo Yatra" to unite the country against the "divisive politics" of the Bharatiya Janata Party-led central government and to unite India; to come together and strengthen our nation.
The meet was also attended by Thoubal Block Congress Committee, Youth and women members and former councillors.
