Sit-in protests driver's murder, JAC serves deadline

Denouncing the killing of driver Yanglem Priyobrata (48), son of Y Kesho of Nachou Awang Leikai Ward No 2, who went missing on December 30, 2022 and was found dead near Khuzama village in Nagaland on Saturday, a sit-in protest was staged at Nachou Panthong on Sunday.
Speaking to media persons on the sidelines of the protest, JAC Against the Killing of Y Priyobrata publicity secretary Laishram Menjor Singh insisted that the government must accept the demands of the JAC within 48-hour, otherwise they will not claim the body, impose bandh and resort to other forms of intense agitations.
The demands included death penalties against Heisnam James (31), son of H Kumar of Lamboi Khongnangkhong, who has been arrested by the police in connection with the death Y Priyobrata along with other conspirators, pay compensation of Rs 30 lakh to Priyobrata's family, hand over his EECO van (MNOI-AS-7696) to the bereaved family and provide a suitable government job to the next of kin of the deceased, he reiterated.
During the protest, protestors held placards inscribed with slogans demanding justice for Y Priyobrata, giving compensation, finding all the culprits, etc.
Some other protesters said they have launched the agitation demanding action against the culprits involved in the kidnapping and murder of Priyobrata.
Meanwhile, reports have been received that drivers in the state are also planning to launch agitations against the murder even as Manipur police had made a routine inquiry and requested the Nagaland counterpart to furnish available information.
Meanwhile, Priyokumar wide Ibemcha said: "My husband has been doing a passenger's service in his van between Imphal and Moreh, the border town.
We heard from him at 9 pm on December 30 informing us that he will be going to Nagaland with some passengers.
"But later when we called him, he did not pick up the mobile phone and eventually it was switched off.
We had lodged a missing report with the Bishnupur police station on January 2".Mention may be made that there had been several incidents of beating up, killings and robbing of Manipur drivers in some parts of Nagaland.
