Balkrisna said that Fisheries Department would collaborate with Agriculture Department, Horticulture and Soil Conservation Department and organisations like MOMA and they would be given stalls without charging any fee so that vegetables, fruits and other items needed for worshipping Ima Emoinu are made available at the fish fair.
He said that the Directorate of Fisheries has communicated with private entrepreneurs and Start-Ups in connection with the 1st Emoinu Fish Festival.
To a query, the Fisheries Director said that the Sareng currently reared in Manipur was brought from Bangladesh as fingerlings in July 2021 .
More fingerlings were also brought from Yangon amidst the political turmoil in the neighbouring country, he said.
The Sareng fingerlings were brought from the foreign countries by air and they cannot be reared by using common fish feeds.
Moreover, many of the fingerlings perished on the way.
That is why the price of Sareng is high, he said.
Nonetheless, plans are afoot to breed Sareng fingerlings in the State using state of the art technology.
Efforts are on to select matured Sarengs and use them as brooders, Balkrisna said.
If the breeding of Sareng can be done successfully in the State, its price would certainly decline, he added.
