Imphal, December 29 2022:
All Loktak Lake Areas Fishers Union, Manipur (ALLAFUM) has announced a ban on the use of LED Bulb and Injao Thaba technique at night in Loktak Lake during the period from December 30, 2022 to March 30, 2023 .
A release issued by Heisnam Arunkumar, president of ALLAFUM informed that the restriction was imposed based on the resolution taken by the Union in 2016 .
The Union advised all the fishermen and fisher women to not use the Injao Thaba technique or other deadly techniques such as poison and dynamo (batteries) .
Elaborating on the reason to ban use of LED bulb and Injao Thaba, the Union said, "This is the season for fingerlings to grow and overfishing during the day & night can lead to quick depletion of fish population" .
"Migratory birds visit Loktak during this season and it is critical that we do not disturb them particularly at night", it added.
ALLAFUM also urged all motor boats to refrain from plying at Loktak except for some essential ones like those between Thanga & Karang and medical emergencies.
ALLAFUM further appealed to the Loktak Development Authority to enforce the ban on motor boats and use of LED bulbs for night fishing.
