Recalling the Meira Paibi movement launched to protect lives of innocent men, women and children of Manipur from the draconian Armed Forces' Special Powers Act (AFSPA), 1958, during the observance of the 42nd Meira Paibi Houdokhiba Numit held at Mayang Langjing Sorok Mapal community hall, on Wednesday, All Manipur Women's Social Reformation and Development Samaj (NUPI SAMAJ) has appealed to the government to stop the process for legalising manufacture and sale of liquor in the state.
Speaking on the occasion, NUPI SAMAJ president Th Ramani reminded that drugs and liquor have been seriously affecting the Manipuri society for the last 40/50 years with many substance abusers committing atrocities on their wives and children under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
While menfolk remained under the influence of drugs and alcohol, womenfolk, on the other hand, with torches in their hands, maintained vigilant throughout the night, trying to save the menfolk from falling prey to arbitrary actions by armed forces under the AFSPA.
Since then, the movement of Meira Paibi in the state evolved, she recalled while appealing to the government to stop the legalisation process of alcohol and save Manipur from further degradation.
Presided over by Mayang Langjing Gram Panchayat pradhan Takhellambam Tompok Meetei, the observance function was also attended by AMKIL president Lourembam Nganbi Leima, Tammi Chingmi Apunba Nupi Lup president Yambem Momon, UCM vice president YK Dhiren, UPF Manipur president Nongthombam Rupachandra and Mayang Langjing Semgat Sagat Nupi Lup president Chongtham Keinahanbi as presidium members.
