Imphal, December 29 2022:
Noting that inability to vote due to internal migration (domestic migrants) is one of the prominent reasons to be addressed to improve voter turnout and ensure participative elections, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has geared up to pilot a multi Constituency remote voting machine (RVM) for facilitating participation of domestic migrants from their remote locations or current residence in voting for their home Constituencies.
According to a statement issued by ECI Joint Director (Media) Anuj Chandak, this modified form of EVM can handle up to 72 multiple Constituencies from a single remote polling booth.
The ECI has already invited all recognised eight National and 57 State political parties to a demonstration of the functioning of the multi-constituency prototype remote EVM on January 16 where the members of the technical expert committee would also be present.
The ECI has also solicited written views of recognised political parties by January 31 on various related issues including changes required in legislation, administrative procedures and voting method/RVM/technology, if any other, for the domestic migrants.
Based on the feedbacks received from various stakeholders and demonstration of the prototype, the ECI would appropriately carry forward the process of implementing remote voting method, it said.
