Prevention of child marriages deliberated

The need of preventing child marriages in the State and raising mass awareness regarding the impacts of child marriages were deliberated.
The above was discussed during a one day State level sensitization cum consultation workshop on 'Preventing Child Marriage in Manipur' held today at Manipur Press Club.
The workshop was jointly organised by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), Manipur Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MCPCR) and Manipur Seva Samiti.
MCPCR Chairperson Phurailatpam Manibabu Sharma; Kshtra Karvayah of Manipur Seva Samiti, Khwairakpam Rajen Singh; Social Welfare Director, Ngangom Uttam Singh, MCS and Joint Director, Bantee Singh Konthoujam MCS attended the workshop as the presidium members.

Speaking at the occasion, Ngangom Uttam Singh underscored the importance of preventing child marriages in the State and stressed on the need of raising awareness regarding the various provisions enlisted in The Prohibition of Child Marriage Act 2006 .
Elaborating on the impacts of early marriage in the lives of immature individuals, he appealed to all the parents and guardians to prevent marriage of their children who have not yet attained the permissible age of marriage.
Considering the cases of elopement among children, he urged the parents to help and guide them towards the right path until they are able to acknowledge the pros and cons of marriages.
The Social Welfare also appealed to all to abide by the permissible age of marriage as laid by the competent authorities which is 18 years for females and 21 years for males.
Regarding the various health and psychological problems one may experience due to early marriage, he stressed on the need of raising mass awareness to prevent such marriages.
Teachers also have a key role in sensitizing the students about the impacts of early marriages, he added.
MCPCR Chairperson Phurailatpam Manibabu Sharma while speaking at the programme, expressed concern over the violence of the provisions of The Prohibition of Child Marriage Act 2006 in the State.
He called for cohesive efforts to prevent child or early marriages in the State and appealed to the authorities concerned not to issue any marriage certificate of under-age individuals if such requests are made.
Many resource persons also spoke in connection with the topic of the workshop during the technical session.
