Imphal, November 03 2014:
The third Manipur University IT Festival was opened today at the university's Centenary Hall.
The festival is being held on the theme 'Marching ahead with technology' under the auspices of MU IT Club of Computer Science Department.
National Institute of Technology (NIT) Manipur Director Dr S Birendra, Head, Computer Science Department, MU Dr H Mamata and NIC Manipur Centre Senior Information Officer Kh Rajen attended the opening function as chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.
The three-day festival would feature IT awareness session, quiz, debating, dance (solo and group) competitions apart from Miss IT Contest, fashion parade, slide show, unplugged musical programmes and mobile short films.
Speaking at the opening function, NIC Manipur Centre Senior Information Officer Kh Rajen said that utilities of IT were vast and varied.
But the State's position and capability in terms of harnessing the potential of IT sector merits serious introspection.
School/college students need proper guidance as far as IT and its varied utilities are concerned.
Talking about the new education system called tele-education through IT, Rajen asserted that shortage of faculty members at MU can be addressed to some extent through tele-education approach.
But so far, this is not done at Manipur University and no one is sure whether it is due to unavailability of appropriate bandwidth or fund paucity, Rajen said.
Dr S Birendra suggested incorporation of school students and additional items/programmes in the festival.
Formal education in class rooms is not enough.
Informal education through IT club would greatly enhance knowledge of all students, said Birendra.
It is reported that competitions in computer programming, gaming, spot photography and MS Paint would be organised in the course of the festival.
