AMSU sets deadline to nab rape accused

AMSU has warned of launching intense agitation if one Thangjam Malemnganba (22), son of Th Kameshor of Tiger Camp in Imphal East district, who has been accused of raping a class VIII student in 2021, is not arrested by March 10.Addressing newspersons at AMSU office on Sunday, its Imphal East District Committee women affairs secretary L Tina recounted that a complaint was filed at Imphal East Women police station, Porompat on November 24 last against Malemnganba for outraging modesty the minor girl student, who hails from a village in Imphal East district.
However, no action has been taken up against the accused till date despite registration of a case under POCSO.
The Union feels that the authority concerned is not paying any attention to the case despite passage of three months, which is grave injustice, she decried.
Tina continued that such incidents are repeatedly happening in the state due to lack of commitment of successive governments to deal with the perpetrators in a befitting manner.
The government machinery must take action against the rape accused by March 10, failing which the Union will iiaitiate suitable action against those involved in crime against women, she further warned.
