Senapati, February 27 2022:
Friends Across Barriers (FAB), MANEDA, Senapati organised a "Mixed Volleyball" tourney to preach gender equality and social inclusion through sports yesterday at Mini Stadium ground, Senapati.
Meveine Kazia Sousho, coordinator, Project FAB, MANEDA, Senapati in her introduction stated that sports is not only about the play but also teaches one about discipline, consistency, mutual respect, team spirit, equality, goals, etc.
Engaging women and girl children in sports will help promote self-confidence, leadership, teamwork skills and a sense of achievement, Meveine Kazia Sousho said.
Sports provide a space in which women can renegotiate certain concepts of femininity and masculinity.
Promoting female involvement in sports can be an important tool in gender equality and women's empowerment and more broadly in development and social change, she said.
T Peter Rangnamei, director of MANEDA stated that the mixed volleyball was the first of its kind.
Among many tribal societies, women are considered as "second class, just housewives or weaker sections", however, development can be achieved only when both male and female are empowered equally, he said.
Organising such an event will showcase the importance to develop both male and female in a society, he added.
The director also sought cooperation from all to achieve the goal in the near future.
Altogether, 14 villages took part in the sports where the final match was played between Mao Karong and Mayangkhang Khunou.
The Mao Karong emerged winners and were awarded with cash prizes and sports materials.
