JD (U) candidate shot, injured

Imphal, February 27 2022:
Barely 48 hours ahead of the first phase of the election, Janata Dal (United) candidate in Kshetrigao Assembly Constituency Wanglembam Rojit Singh alias Bullet (42) was shot at by unknown assailants coming on a two wheeler late last night at around 11.30 .
Reportedly, Rojit, s/o, (L) Basanta Singh of Porompat Thawan Thaba Leikai received a bullet injury on his chest and he is undergoing treatment at Raj Medicity.
He is out of danger.
According to reliable information, the incident took place when the candidate was meeting some of his workers at Naharup Khongjil Leikai Makhapat.
Soon after the attack, supporters and escorts of the candidate chased the assailants but they fled from the spot taking advantage of darkness and narrow lanes of the locality, said sources.

The candidate's wife Wahengbam ongbi Aruna condemned the attempt on her husband's life.
Porompat police have registered an FIR.
The JD (U) State unit and Kshetrigao AC MLA Nahakpam Indrajit also condemned the attack.
N Indrajit of the BJP said that certain people resorting to violence using lethal weapons is an act of cowardice.
Saying that the attack has no relation whatsoever with the BJP, he urged the authorities concerned to look into the matter and nab the assailants at the earliest.
The MLA also prayed for speedy recovery of W Rojit.
Kshetrigao will go to the poll, along with 37 other Constituencies on February 28 .
Meanwhile, another press meet was held at Porompat Thawantnaba Leikai, during which JD (U) Kshetrigao Mandal president Nongthombam Chandra said that a complaint has been sent to the RO concerned to initiate necessary action.
Saying that Rojit is unlikely to cast his vote as he is in ICU, he added that the incident should be condemned by all.
Continuing that no development can be brought through violence, he urged all the candidates to shun violence and intimidation so as to enable a free and fair election.
He also said that all candidates in Kshetrigao AC have criminal cases pending against them other than Rojit.
A sit-in protest was also staged at Porompat Thawan Thaba Leikai.
Placards that read "Justice for W Rojit" and "We condemn violence" were used among others.
