'Mixed volleyball on gender equality thru sports' held

'Mixed volleyball on gender equality and social inclusion through sports' was organised on Saturday by Friends Across Barriers (FEB), MANEDA, Senapati at Mini Stadium ground, Senapati.
Meveine Kazia Sousho, co-orinator, Project FAB, MANEDA, Senapati in her speech stated that sports is not only about the play but it teaches one about discipline, consistency, mutual respect, team spirit, equality, goals, etc By giving opportunities to women and girl children to engage in sports, communities and societies empower women and girls on an individual level by promoting self-confidence, leadership, teamwork skills and a sense of achievement.
Promoting female involvement in sports is an important tool in gender equality and women's empowerment and more broadly in development and social change, she added.
T Peter Rangnamei, director, MANEDA, said that the mixed volleyball is the first of its kind which is purely to exercise equality in the society.
Among the tribal, the women are considered as second class, just housewife or weaker section of the society.
Development entails equality of male and female, he said.
With the Friends Across Barriers (FAB) Project undertaken under MANEDA, Senapati, selected 16 villages reportedly took part in the sports to work together for 4 years in promoting harmony, peace and development in the region, the director further informed.
Altogether, 14 villages took part in the sports where the final match was played between Mao Karong and Mayangkhang Khunou.
The Mao Karong the winners arid received cash prizes with sports materials as encouragement to girls to play more.
