The experimental plantation of mustard for producing oil in 578 hectares of land in Andro Poiroupat under North Eastern Hill Component of All India Coordinated Research Project on Rapeseed is ready for harvest.
Central Agricultural University, Imphal took primary role in plantation of mustard by farmers of the area under the funding of ICAR DRMR Bharatpur, Rajasthan.
CAU Prof L Nabachandra and scientists of the university inspected the plantation area on Friday.
Speaking on the sidelines of the inspection, All India Coordinate Research project on Rapeseed mustard plant breeding scientist Dr Pusparani informed that the mustard seeds planted in the area are TS 38, NRCHB 101, DRMR 150-30 and NRCYS 05-02 .
The said mustards were planted on experimental basis, she continued.
Stating that there is possibility of harvesting the seeds from the farm more than expected, she explained that the said types of mustard are suitable to the soil of Manipur.
She pointed out that mustard oils are imported into the state due to lack of production in the state.
As such, to overcome the import dependency, the initiatives of planting mustard was taken up in farmland which remain barren after harvest of paddy crops.
Similar initiatives of planting mustard have also been taken up in various districts of the state, Pusparani said.
