Imphal, February 11 2022:
Just a day after the Manipur Assembly poll dates have been rescheduled to February 28 and March 5, the Umanglai Kanba Apunba Lup (UKAL) has pointed out that Saroi Khangba (propitiation of the evil spirit) which is per-formed on the first Saturday of the month of Lamta by the Meitei/Meetei falls on March 5 .
UKAL, in a statement, urged the Chief Election Officer of Manipur and the Election Commission to reschedule the second phase of polling to another day.
It also said that holding elections on the day of Saroi Khangba which occurs only once a year would create severe inconvenience to many, specially priests, priestesses and other religious leaders who have to travel far to perform the rituals.
Saying that fixing the second phase of the poll on this very important day is rather unfortunate, UKAL continued that they will not remain silent if the demand is not entertained before holding the first phase of election on February 28 .
The State Assembly election was earlier fixed on February 27 and March 3 .
