Man dies in police lock up, VA condemns

Churachandpur, February 11 2022:
One Chinkhanlian Guite (50) s/o Tualkhum of New Lamka, who was lodged in Churachandpur police station custody was found dead under suspicious circumstances around 6 am Friday.
The man was arrested from his residence between 3-4 pm by the district police on the alleged charge of molestation of a minor girl and detained him in the police station.
However, the accused was round hanging in the lockup with a rope, according to a source.
The deceased was a divorcee and survived by two sons, according to a family member.
A team of forensic experts from Imphal carried out an investigation inside the lock up.
DIG Range III Angam Kamei also rushed to the district and had interaction with the top police officials of the district.
The body has now been be taken to RIMS hospital, Imphal, for post mortem.
Meanwhile, V Munhoih Village Authority expressed shock over the death of Chinkhanlian Guite, in a suspicious manner while in custody of Churachandpur police.
Such incident of custodial death is a clear manifestation of administrative failure, pointing to the face of sheer absence of discipline on the part of the police who manned the police station.
It appears that each and every detained/arrested person, irrespective of the intensity of crimes committed, could be given any level of torture by the police paying scant attention to rules laid down for them, said the village Authority in a press release.
The village authority also strongly condemned the incident and termed it as unwarranted, while appealing to the district magistrate to oversee the matter and institute judicial enquiry and take action as per the law of the land.
