Association urges Labour Dept to issue bonus payment directive

While pointing out that minimum bonus equal to 8.33 per cent of the salary or wages earned by employees is to be given by employers of factory or shop during the accounting year according to The Payment of Bonus Act, 1965, All Manipur Shops & Establishment Employees' Association has urged the deputy labour commissioner, Manipur to issue an appeal to all the employers for payment of annual bonus to the employees under the Act for the accounting year 2021-22 prior to Diwali and Ningol Chakkouba festivals as usual.
A release issued by Association's general secretary Pheiroijam Boby informed that Payment of Bonus Act, 1965 applies to every factory covered by the Factories Act, 1948 (No 63 of 1948) and every shop and other business establishments including hotel, restaurant, eating house, newspaper establishment, etc., in which ten or more people are employed.
As contemplated by Section 10 and Section 11 of the said Act every employer of the factory and every employer of such shops and other business establishments are bound to pay to his/her employees (other than apprentice) employed on salary or wages not exceeding Rs 10,000 per month for every accounting year and minimum bonus equal to 8.33 per cent of the salary or wages earned by the employees during the accounting year (equal to one month's wages), whether or not he has any allocable surplus (sixty per cent of gross profit) in the accounting year.
While recalling that Office of the Deputy Labour Commissioner, Manipur usually issued appeal to the employers concerned for making payment to their respective employees annual bonus prior to the big festivals of Diwali and Ningol Chakkouba in the interest of the poor employees, the Association appealed for directing the employers to ensure payment of the festival bonus for this year as well.
