Ukhrul, December 15 2021:
As the grandeur of the year's biggest festival Christmas is on its way, residents are already beginning to feel the burden of traffic congestion on the main thoroughfares of Ukhrul town.
The inrush of festive shoppers and vehicles from all corners of the district continued to grow in themarket areas with each passing day and the district's under-staffed traffic police department is having a tough time.
Unlike in the past, the small township is now increasingly facing heavy traffic issues due to increase in the number of motor owners.
The situation even tends to aggravate during the festival time.
Taking cognisance of the deplorable traffic situation in the town, the Small Town Committee (STC) of Autonomous District Council (ADC), Ukhrul has come up with 'Shine Ukhrul', a drive to improve the traffic management and regulations, in collaboration with the traffic police and a local NGO, Kachir Trust.
The modus operandi of the initiative is to use the service of the NGO volunteers to assist the traffic police in managing and regulating the traffic rules in the town areas.
On Wednesday, ADC Ukhrul caretaker chairman Dr Yaronsho Ngalung officially flagged off the drive in the presence of OSD/STC Chihansing Horam and traffic OC Barnabas at ADC Ukhrul office campus, Phungreitang.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Ngalung conceded that the STC of the ADC administration is concerned about the traffic system here and has been doing its bit from time to time for its improvement.
He informed that the collaborative drive was initiated with the aim of streamlining the management and regulation of traffic rules for the safety and convenience of the public.
The ADC caretaker chief went on to state that the drive, though a temporary measure, is not just meant for the coming festive season but will continue until it brings a positive change in the prevailing traffic scenario.
"As such, we earnestly appeal to the public to extend utrtiost co-operation to make this drive successful in enforcing the requisite traffic rules for the benefit of the people," Dr Ngalung said, while adding that the drive entailed necessary expense, time and energy.
OSD Horam also assured the volunteers of meeting their requirements in the course of their duties, in consultation with the ADC Ukhrul chairman and CEO.
Meanwhile, traffic OC Barnabas briefed the volunteers on the need to deal with everyone including traffic offenders in a calm and decent manner and to avoid any confrontations with anyone.
"Let's treat everyone well and help them realise their mistakes and learn more about the existing traffic rules," he said.
The Kachir Trust is currently offering the service of its 20 volunteers for the mission.
