Court sentences convict Md Sikander to 3 yrs RI

Imphal, March 04 2023:
The court of Special Judge, NDPS (FTC) Mani pur Alek Muivah on Saturday sentenced Md Sikander (26) s/o Md Nasir of Lilong Heinou Makhong, who was caught smuggling 360 SP capsules by a NAB PS team in 2006 from Lilong area, to 3 years in rigorous imprisonment.
During the sentence hearing, the Special PP prayed to the court for awarding maximum punishment under ND&PS Act to the convict.
The defence counsel submitted that the convict had no prior criminal records, while adding that he (convict) is a small-time shopkeeper taking care of his family including 4 kids.
In addition, the convict had spent 37 days in judicial custody during the trial.
As such, the counsel prayed to the Court to award a sentence matching the time the convict had spent in judicial custody and set him (convict) free.
After listening to the submissions, the court said that as the convict did not make the claim of using the drugs for himself, it is clear that the drugs were for smuggling.
Most victims of narcotic and psychotropic substances are young in age.
If close attention is not paid, a generation is likely to disappear, it observed.
The court then sentenced Md Sikander to 3 years in rigorous imprisonment and asked him to pay a fine of Rs 20,000 .
If he is unable to pay the fine, he will stay in jail for 2 more months.
The time he spent in judicial custody during the trial of the case will be commuted from the total sentence period.
