BKS celebrates 43rd foundation day

Bharatiya Kisan Sangh (BKS), Manipur celebrated the 43rd foundation day (Sthapa-na Diwas) of BKS at Manipur Press Club, here, on Saturday with CAU extension education director Prof Ph Ranjit Sharma as chief guest, BKS Manipur president N Induboson as president and RSS Manipur Prant 'karvah' S Tarunkumar Sharma as guest of honour.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof Ranjit stressed the need for the policy makers to prioritise development of the agriculture sector as sufficient production of grains and crops would help improve the national and regional economy.
While pointing out only two per cent of the total valley areas in the state is feasible for agricultural practice, he suggested thorough discussion by the departments concerned for improving the agricultural sector.
Unlike the past when prime agricultural land in the state used to be left barren after harvest of paddy crop, some farmers have started cultivation of sweet corn and maize in their fields, thereby improving the local economy, the professor said and called upon farmers in the hills to give emphasis on agricultural or horticultural crops to address the problem of poppy plantations.
While urging the Director of Extension Education, CAU and ICAR to help the farmers, he also pledged to extend all possible assistance towards realisation of the goal for self-reliant in food grain.
In his address, BKS general secretary T Dara maintained that majority of the problems in the country could be solved When economy of the farmers, who are producing food for the people, is improved and empowered.
He urged scientists and farmers to join hands for making Manipur an organic state.
Floral tributes were also paid to the photo of Dattopant Thengadi, who founded BKS.
