Workshop on Imphal master plan held

A one-day state level workshop on 'GIS based master plan of greater Imphal for the horizon year-2043' was organised by the Town Planning Department at City Convention Centre, Palace Compound, here, on Saturday.
MAHUD minister Y Khemchand, who attended inaugural session of the workshop as chief guest, said that the town planning department in coordination with School of Planning & Architect (SPA), Bhopal has been taking up various works with significant speed and progress.
Though development process in greater Imphal area faced various issues due to lack of proper planning in the past, the engagement of SPA, Bhopal by the planning department following a cabinet decision, has resulted in significant progress in development activities, he informed, adding that the workshop was envisioned to ensure proper and planned development of Manipur in the next 20 years or so.
The main objective of the workshop is to consult with different sections of people on modifying greater Imphal area in such a way that the existing problems like traffic congestion and daily chaos in market area could be eased, Khemchand said.
In his key note address, chief town planner N Benju said that the main reason behind launching GIS based master plan of greater Imphal for the horizon year-2043 is to make Imphal the gateway to Southeast Asia through infrastructure, socio-economic and environment management.
The master plan will be fully funded by the Central government but all activities will be based on Manipur Town & Country Planning Act, 1975.The master plan will cover 151.55 sq km area in greater Imphal, he said, adding that coverage of greater Imphal area has been increased from 135.29 sq km to 151.55 sq km.
