4 held with illicit tobacco items worth Rs 53 lakh

Imphal, March 30 2015 : Four persons were arrested and seized a large quantity of illicit tobacco products worth nearly Rs 53.55 from them by a team of Narcotics & Affairs of Border Police Station from different parts of Imphal on Monday.

The team led by Imphal NAB Officer-in-Charge, Imphal West Food Safety Officer Y Seityajit and Churachandpur Food Safety Officer T Sunilkumar also seized 23,885 empty zarda canes, which were to be turned into original zarda products, along the Imphal Airport Road.

According to a statement of RK Tutusana, PRO, Manipur Police, the seized contraband items include illegal zarda and kheini items.

The arrested are Kishorekumar Prasad (32), Krishna Sahu (27), Jai Ram Prasad (38) and Ajay Kumar (30), all from Bihar.

A reliable source informed that acting on a tip off, the combined team led by NAB personnel conducted separate operations in North AOC, Tiddim road, Khoyathong Pukhri Achouba and Thangal bazaar areas.

A large quantity of tobacco items, which were unloaded from an inter-state bus, was recovered from North AOC.

Contraband tobacco products worth around Rs 10 lak were further seized from a vehicle on the Tiddim road.

The team then seized a large quantity of the same items from Khoyathong Pukhri Achouba.

One of the arrested men, namely Krishna Sahu was earlier arrested by Imphal West Food Safety Officer.

But he was released after paying a fine under Food Safety & Standard Act, 2006 .
