Imphal, March 30 2015 :
PHED has been pumping up more than 40,000 litres of water per day from Leishang Hiden in Imphal to distribute drinking water to the residents of Imphal east and Imphal West now reeling under acute shortage of water caused by scanty rainfall this season.
The water level in Leishang Hiden has lowered as the Public Health and Engineering Department (PHED) continues to draw water from it on daily basis using as many as 20 water tankers.
A PHED official said the department has been supplying drinking water to the public since March 24 to help relieve water scarcity.
"We're treating the drinking water chlorine," he said.
Steps will be taken to draw water from the adjoining area of Imphal river and Iril river near Lilong in Thoubal district, the official informed.
He said PHED will continue drinking water supply to the public if the dry spell continues further.
