Need to promote classical music: B Jayentakumar

Noted lyricist and ex-President of Manipuri Sahitya Parishad B Jayentakumar Sharma has emphasized on the need to promote classical music in the State.
He was speaking as Chief Guest of the 52nd foundation day of Shri Shri Bal Mukunda Dev Government Music College (SSBDMC) held at Chandrakriti Auditorium, Palace Compound here today.
Jayentakumar further said that the classical music is a special kind of music which gives spiritual happiness to the listeners.
The then Kings of Manipur were great patrons of Nat Sankritan and tried their best to promote the classical music.
However, the popularity of classical music is now fading gradually in the State with less number of artistes and patrons.
The Government Music College should take greater responsibility in promoting classical music in the State, he exhorted.
Deputy Director (Prog) of Art & Culture, Manipur L Kishwarjeet said that SSBD Music College has been organizing short-term refresher courses on both traditional and western music.
The college has great roles in imparting quality music education in the State, he noted.
The foundation day was also attended by Commissioner of Art & Culture Dr RK Nimai and Director of Art & Culture Dr K Sobita as President and Guest of Honour respectively.
Prizes for the State Level Classical Music Competition-2014 organized by SSBD Music College were also distributed during the occasion.
