Maharaj Nara Singh remembered

Maharaj Nara Singh, also known as Chingthanglen Pamheiba or Meetingu Lairen Nonglen Sendreng Manik Khomba, was fondly remembered on his 222nd birth anniversary on Tuesday.
An impressive function was held to mark the birth anniversary of Nara Singh at Sagolband Mabudhou Mantri Maning Leikai in Imphal West during which Nara Singh Awards were also distributed.
The function jointly organized by the Maharaja Nara Singh Memorial Committee, Imphal and Shri Shri Gopinathjee Board, Rajbari Nongmeibung, Imphal was graced by SC Duibadi, Major, IGAR (S) as chief guest, C Upendra, retired Sessions Judge as guest of honour and E Sonamani, retired IAS and Sahitya Akademi Awardee as president.
Nara Singh Awards which carry Rs 5, 000 cash each were conferred to Kh Mangi, Suchiradipta Bhattacharjee, Tingvei Hangshing, Union Tae-Kwando Academy, Miranda Mongbijam, HSLC exam topper and Rup Mahal Theatre, Imphal.
Two more Nara Singh Awards carrying Rs 10, 000 and Rs 12, 000 were respectively given to Inspector Laishram Satyajit of Narcotics & Affairs of Border (NAB) and Integrated Women and Children development Centre.
Maharaj Nara Singh was one of the most illustrious kings who ruled Manipur.
Though his reign was a short period of six years from 1844 to 1850, but his patriotism, courage, military skill, political wisdom and administration capabilities had made him the national hero of Manipur.
He was the son of King Badra Singh (April 1825 -June 1825 ) and Queen Loitongbam Chanu Premlata and the great grandson of Emperor Pamheiba, popularly known as Garibniwaz (1709-1748).He was born at Sangolbal Moirang Leirak, Imphal.
