Imphal, May 06 2014:
Child beggar population in the Imphal market area is alarmingly on the rise since the past few months.
As such, street vendors of the market have urged the concerned authority to take immediate intervention in the matter and solve the problem.
Speaking to media persons at Manipur Press Club here today, N.Bina, secretary of Khwairamband Keithelgi Mataida Potpham Phambi Lup told that many children between the age group 7-15 years often in the disguise of being orphans come to the vendors sitting in the market area to beg saying that either that they have no parents or their parents are sick or dead.
Bina said that the vendor association had already informed the Child Help Line committee to monitor the activities of child beggars in the market and take up necessary measures to stop the children from indulging in such inappropriate activities.
She informed that even after repeated reminders to address the issue, the authority has turned a blind eye to the cries of the women vendors.
Adding to the woes, Bina further told that the Child Help Line phone number introduced by the organization cannot be reached by any other mobile networks except Aircel and BSNL.
