Imphal, May 06 2014:
State JD-U president Tombi on Tuesday claimed that although the Government of Manipur has formulated an action plan to deal with the present water crisis, most of the districts in the State are not getting drinking water for daily maintenance.
Talking to reporters at his party office here, Tombi further said no doubt the people of Manipur are facing the problem of acute water shortage owing to very sparse rainfall this pre-monsoon season and the problem has got worsen despite the Government's claim that drinking water is distributing to the public.
"I went to Churachandpur and Chandel districts recently.
I didn't see people getting drinking water there.
But I show some places in Churachandpur where water from Khuga Dam was supplying scantily to limited people," Tombi claimed.
The water level in Singda Dam reservoir has now nearly crossed warning level, the JD-U leader said, claiming that the drinking water presently distributing to the people in the valley districts by the Government is not safe.
On the other hand, poor families are not getting this intermitted water supply from PHED as rich people are drawing this water using electric pumps everywhere, Tombi claimed.
Showing concern over unhygienic drinking water, he appealed to Imphal Municipal Council (IMC) to check the water currently being used by public in Imphal city area.
Tombi also claimed that Anganphou (early rice crop) which is cultivated in April and harvested in July in Manipur is not possible this season due to the driest condition.
He added that Anganphou cultivation in Shamurou, Wangoi, Chirai and Kakching which are covered by Imphal Barrage has totally failed this time.
The same situation is facing in places like Wabgai, Hiyanglam, Tejpur, Lamjao, Langmeidong and Elang Khangbokpi under Sekmai Barrage where paddy fields have remained desiccated, he claimed.
