Imphal, December 23, 2011:
After two round of meetings between the JAC formed in protest against the killing and Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh, the state government has agreed to institute a
magisterial inquiry into the controversial killing of Laishram Ranbir alias Eshel (40) s/o L Ibobi of Uchiwa Awang Leikai.
Police claimed that Ranbit was killed by a
team of Imphal West District Police Commandos during a shoot-out in the intervening night of December 20 and 12 at Narankongin.
However, the family members refuted the
police claim, asserting that Ranbir was a Congress worker and he had been picked up from home by the police commandos.
In the first round of meeting today, no
agreement between the two parties could be arrived at with the JAC sticking to its demand for a magisterial inquiry into the killing while the Chief Minister insisting
on a police departmental inquiry.
The second round of meeting which was held at around 6.30 pm was also attended by MLA of Mayang Imphal A/C Dr Ratankumar.
It was
finally agreed that the government would be ordering a magisterial inquiry, necessary assistance would be provided to the bereaved family members and the post-mortem
of the body would be conducted tomorrow with video coverage in the presence of a District Magistrate.
The JAC has warned that it would not take back the body if the
demands were not fulfilled by the government.
Late Ranbir left behind his wife and two children, one son and one daughter.
