66th Wildlife Week observed in Senapati

Senapati, October 01 2021: Senapati Forest Division observed the 66th Wildlife Week, 2021 under the theme "Wildlife, Nature & Human Existence" by organising various competitions for school children at St Anthony's School, Rikhumai Taphou, Senapati on Friday.

Speaking on the occasion, DFO Senapati Forest Division D John Sha informed that Wildlife Week is observed all over India in the first week of October to inculcate the importance of wildlife and the forest among the public with special emphasis on students.

Citing reports, the DFO stated that although Manipur is a small state, it constitutes more than 22% of flora and fauna biodiversity, of which 25% is endemic.

There are 34 species of edible fungi, 500 species of orchids, 55 species of bamboos, 240 fish species, 430 medicinal plants and more than 4,000 angiosperms, 600 species of birds, 90 species of mammals, 35 species of amphibians, and 85 reptiles in the state.

Manipur has earned a position in the top 10 Biodiversity Hot Spots in the world and is second in India, he said.

The DFO also mentioned the importance of wildlife conservation which is beneficial for all.

Report's by some scientists say that destruction of forest directly affects the biodiversities which is harmful to humans.

The forest department alone cannot stop such harmful human activities.

It is the responsibility of every individual to protect and preserve the environment to enjoy life in the long run, he added.

Essay writing competition was conducted in three categories.

The first category for Class VI to VIII was participated by 20 students from 3 schools.

Students of class IX to XII formed the second category and 39 of them from 3 schools competed while in the third category, students of class VI to VIII competed in essay writing on the topics of their choice - "My first visit to zoo, my experience going to the forest, survival of human depends on the survival of wildlife, my responsibility towards wildlife and to stop hunting wild animals and birds is my responsibility".

Quiz competition was conducted for students of class IX to XII.

Divided into two sections as general topic and topic on Manipur, 50 questions were asked in the competition participated by 31 students from 6 different schools.

In the online slogan writing competition conducted on the theme exposition, R Rahane San, a class VII student of St Anthony School, bagged the first position; Ledu Christopher, a class VI student of St Anthony's School, bagged the second prize and Maveo Kashipri, a Class VI student of Mave School bagged the third prize while Ziisane, a Class VII student of Lao Radiant Hr Sec School and Khoziia Kashipri, a Class VIII student of Mave School got consolation prizes in the first category (Classes VI to VIII).

In the second category (Classes IX to XII), Veveine Vemai, a Class X student of St.

Anthony's School, bagged the first position; Shomerin, a Class XI student of Lao Radiant Hr Sec School, bagged the second position and Kohloune, a Class X student of Lao Radiant Hr Sec School, bagged the third position while Phamei Siro, a Class IX student of Mt Everest Hr Sec School, and Hrangaone Angani, a Class IX student of St.

Anthony's School, got consolation prizes.

In the essay writing competition for classes VI to VIII, Th Roshine, a Class VII student of Mt Everest Hr Sec School, secured first position; Elizabeth, a Class VIII student of Lao Radiant Hr Sec School, secured second position and Eveni Vivienne Kashipri, a Class VI student of Mave School, got third position while Sharlene Lanah, a Class VI student of St Anthony's School and Chunwibou Newmai, a Class VI student of Mave School, were given consolation prizes.

In the quiz competition for Classes IX to XII, Shoveinii Shapou, a Class X student of St.

Anthony's School, stood first; Judea Kebi Rangnamai, a Class X student of St Anthony's School, was second and Hriishine Ramai, a Class IX student of St Anthony's School, was third while KS Husou, a Class XI student of Lao Radiant Hr Sec School and Prince Kumar, a Class X student of Mt Everest Hr Sec School, were given consolation prizes.

All the 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize winners were awarded Rs 2,000, Rs 1,500 and Rs 1,000 respectively with certificates in each category.

Winners of the online slogan writing competition of both categories have been selected for the state level competitions.
