Imphal, August 31 2022:
Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee of Manipur (STDCM) continued to stage sit-in protest demanding the state government to take up steps necessary for inclusion of the Meetei-Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) list of the Constitution of India.
Speaking on the sidelines of a sit -in staged at Lamlong Keithel on Wednesday, STDCM Youth Wing convenor Nameirakpam Edison informed that the demand for inclusion of the Meetei-Meitei community in the ST list is a request to recognise the community.
To make this demand a reality, the Committee has been staging protests in a democratic manner from time to time.
However, as the government has been apathetic to the demands all this time, the Committee has made preparations to launch more intense agitations, despite the unwilling ness to do so, he contended, while appealing to the government not to wait for the state to go up in flames before taking action and fulfilling the demand.
The sit-in was also attended by representatives of various state CSOs, vendors of Lamlong Keithel, student bodies and women organisations, who held placards and banners inscribed with slogans like 'Include Meetei/Meitei in ST List', 'Save indigenous Meetei-Meitei community', etc.
