NEC fund awaited for slaughter houses: Director

Refuting the reports published in the local dailies on Wednesday regarding the delay in allotting land for setting up five slaughter houses in the state although the state cabinet had approved the same on June 21; Veterinary and Animal Husbandry director Dr Ng Ibotomba has clarified that the locations for the facilities in five districts of the state have already been identified, and the state Planning Department has already submitted the GPS coordinates of the sites to the North Eastern Council (NEC).
Speaking to The People's Chronicle on Wednesday, Dr Ng Ibotombi informed that the construction of the slaughter houses is to be funded by the NEC and will be set up in Senapati, Ukhrul, Imphal West, Imphal East and Churachandpur districts.
The sites for the facilities were finalised after a survey conducted by the deputy commissioners and joint directors of Veterinary department in the districts on suitability of the location, access to roads, transportation and water.
A detailed report of the same was submitted to the administrative secretary concerned on June 30.He informed that for Senapati district, the facility will be set up at Karong Bazar; Langdang village in Ukhrul; near Kabui Khul, Sawombung in Imphal East; for Imphal West in Khurkhul; and for Churachandpur in Gothol village, Kangvai sub-division.
The sites proposed by the Department were produced by the Planning Department for approval and after a round of discussion at the CM Secretariat, finalised.
Presently, the ownerships of the selected sites are being transferred to the Veterinary Department, with process for Ukhrul, Senapati and Imphal West districts already completed.
Dr Ng Ibotombi then said that the total project cost for construction of the 5 slaughter houses is Rs 9.90 crore, with construction for each slaughter house estimated to cost around Rs 1.91 crore.
The total cost also includes expenses for construction of civil work and equipment.
However, the fund for the projects is yet to be released by NEC.
Once the fund is sanctioned, the work will commence immediately.
When the construction is completed, veterinary doctors will thoroughly monitor and the meat approved to be safe for human consumption will be provided to the people, he conveyed.
