Imphal, September 14 2026:
Sit-in protests were staged today at Kwakeithel Thounaojam Leikai Community Hall and Naorem Leikai Nongpok Lairembi Community Hall, demanding updation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) with 1951 as the base year.
The protest demonstrations were organised by different local clubs and meira paibi groups under the aegis of AMUCO, AMAWOVA, PLMPAM, COHR and MSF .
Speaking to the media at Kwakeithel, COHR vice chairman Sougrakpam Leirangtombi said the Government has still not been able to resolve the crisis that began on May 3, 2023 .
Claiming that there has been an influx of illegal immigrants amid the ongoing crisis, she said the movement seeking updation of the NRC before the population census would continue until the demand is fulfilled.
The protesters held placards bearing slogans such as "No census before NRC", "NRC is the way to save the indigenous people" and "Resettle the IDPs" among others.
