All-party meet on NRC convened

Close on the heels of the resolution passed by the Manipur Legislative Assembly on September 2, 2026 which reaffirmed earlier resolutions to update the NRC before census, Chief Minister Y Khemchand today chaired an all-party meeting at the Cabinet Hall of Manipur Secretariat, Mantripukhri.
Even though no MLAs were present at the meeting, representatives of Congress, BJP, CPI, CPI(M), RPI and Forward Bloc were present.
Moreover, representatives of 14 CSOs Kangleipak were also present at the meeting which started at 6 pm and went on till 8.30 pm .

Speaking to media persons after the meeting, 14 CSOs Kangleipak convenor N Shanta said that the coordinating body of the 14 CSOs held a meeting with representatives of political parties at Hotel Imphal on Sunday.
The meeting agreed to exert pressure on the Govt to convene an all-party meeting.
In line with the agreement reached at yesterday's meeting, the Govt convened an all-party meeting today, Shanta said.
The all-party meeting held today agreed on exerting pressure on the Govt to publish a gazette notification on updating NRC in Manipur, he said.
He said that the meeting deliberated on asking the Government of India to adopt 1951 as the base year for updating NRC .
It was agreed that the State Govt would take the primary responsibility of persuading the Centre to publish the gazette notification on updating the NRC and adopting 1951 as the base year, Shanta said.
The meeting further agreed on constituting a sub-committee comprising representatives of CSOs and political parties.
The sub-committee will urge Union Home Minister Amit Shah to update the NRC as and when he visits the State in October this year.
As agreed at the meeting, the sub-committee will go to Delhi and exert pressure on the Govt of India to get the NRC updated, if necessary, Shanta said.
