Imphal, April 30 2023:
Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC) conducted inspection of police stations in Imphal West, Kakching and Thoubal districts on Saturday and expressed disappointment over the condition of these stations.
During the visit, the MHRC team found numerous issues related to the functioning and maintenance of the police stations.
At Singjamei police station, very few police personnel were found stationed, and the male lock-up's cupboards filled with unused materials.
The female lock-up was shared with women police personnel due to absence of separate lock-up for females.
At Lilong police station, the second officer-in-charge was found without uniform, and there was no toilet inside the lock-up.
The team also found seized items near the lockup instead of being kept at the store room.
Similar scenes unfolded at Pallel police station as few police personnel were found present, and the female lock-up filled with unused items.
The male lock-up at Thoubal police station was also not maintained properly with the lock-up room at Women PS Thoubal laying in poor condition, and the women police personnel using the toilet inside the lock-up room due to unavailability of separate toilets.
The MHRC chairperson expressed disappointment over the overall state of the police stations and the improper manner of maintaining general diary entry.
