Imphal, March 03 2015 :
Some 1600 wooden pillars recently discovered at Lousipat in Thoubal district could be a structure dating back to at least two-three centuries, but the site that could be considered archaeological still remains a mystery.
A joint team from Second World War Imphal Campaign Foundation (SWWIFC) and People for Animal, Thoubal (PFA) visited the site on March 1 to ascertain whether the site was used as a bastion during the World War II.
The team led by SWWIFC convenor Rameshwor Yumnam and PFA managing director L Bishwajit Meitei made the trip after reports were published on the discovery of huge pillars on March 1.

Rameshwor said Sanji area, a hillock located in the Lousipat water, is surrounded by the pillars numbering about 1600.The discovered pillars are made of strong timbers, he added.
"Each pillar measures 1 ft in diameter.
The pillars were divided into blocks.
Each block is made of eight pillars with an equal length and breadth which measure 6 ft each", Rameshwor said.
He opined that the pillars could be a structure dating back to two-three centuries and said the erection could not be assumed as a war fortress.
"It might be a plan to avoid losing of Lousipat in the course time or a royal graveyard," he observed.
However, he said investigations will begin in the lake by an expert team with modern tools soon to solve the mystery.
