Imphal, March 03 2015 :
At the invitation of the State Government in connection with the Indira Gandhi National Tribal University (IGNTU) issue, a joint team of Kuki Students' Organisation, General Headquarters (KSO-Ghqs) and All Naga Students' Association Manipur (ANSAM) leaders met Ngamthang Haokip, Minister IFCD & Stationery yesterday at 9.30 am at his office chamber to discuss the demands of IGNTU Students Union, KSO and ANSAM.
On behalf of the State Government, Ngamthang Haokip assured the student leaders that the approach road from NH2 to the University Campus at Makhan will be constructed at the earliest possible time and requested the student bodies to call off the agitation.
According to a joint press communique issued by KSO (Ghqs) and ANSAM, the student bodies appreciated the initiative and concern of the Minister who is also the circle MLA where the IGNTU campus stands.
The student bodies however refused to call off the agitation as assurance after assurance had been given on the IGNTU issue to no avail.
As such, the student bodies instead requested the Government to first start the works and anticipate a positive response from the agitating students.
The IGNTU students had been boycotting classes since early January demanding electricity, water supply and construction of the approach road from NH-2 to the University campus at Makhan so that the next academic session of the university starts at its permanent site at Makhan, Senapati district.
As boycotting of classes seems to be of no help to meet the demands, KSO and ANSAM were compelled to take the agitation to the higher level and had started picketing PWD offices in all the hill districts of the State since February 27 .
A joint meeting of KSO-Ghqs and ANSAM will be held tomorrow to further discuss the IGNTU issue and its mode of agitation which is likely to be intensified.
Meanwhile, ANSAM and KSO (Ghqs) have urged the Chief Minister to take up immediate measures to regularise the service of teachers (2006 batch) appointed on contract basis in the hill districts.
The teachers are engaged by the Directorate of Education (S), Government of Manipur.
ANSAM and KSO (Ghqs) have submitted a joint memorandum to the CM in this regard.
The two students' bodies pointed out that a good number of contract basis teachers was appointed and engaged by the Directorate of Education (S) Hills under the MoU signed between the Government of Manipur and ATSUM in 2006 to cater to the educational needs of the people.
The MoU clearly said that the service of the teachers appointed on contract basis will be utilised until the posts are filled up on regular basis through normal recruitment or special drive as the case may be.
The service extension order of the contract basis teachers and payment of remuneration was made only up to 2008.And thereafter no extension order had been made despite the teachers rendering their valuable service for the past many years.
